Deontay Wilder slams Tyson Fury’s Las Vegas debut as ‘circus’ and rages: ‘It didn’t sit well with me’ – The Samford Crimson

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has attacked Tyson Fury’s Las Vegas debut calling it “a circus” which he hated.

Fury took on the then unbeaten German Tom Schwarz in his Las Vegas debut, entering the MGM Grand arena dressed as ‘Uncle Sam’ in Apollo Creed’s outfit from Rocky IV.

But the Gypsy King was able to get the early knockout win, stopping the game Schwarz in the second round in a fight when Fury looked levels ahead of his opponent.

The attendance on the night was first reported to be around 9,012, but was later changed to just under 5,000. The capacity for the MGM Grand in Vegas is 17,000.

Wilder, who fought Fury to a controversial draw back in December last year, told World Boxing News: “The whole thing didn’t sit right, it was like a circus to me. The whole promotion was a circus to me.

“They can’t advertise me knocking him out over and over and over again, with the same old stuff and him coming out to the American flag, Living in America. I didn’t like the theme, it didn’t sit right with me and I didn’t like it.

“If anybody was laughing then it was to be laughing at him, not with him that’s for sure. Here we go, we got this guy from England who’s supposed to come over and ‘save America’ – ah man.”

Speaking on the low attendance at the arena on the night, Wilder said: “I guess it was entertaining to the people that was there y’know, just the FEW people that was there.

“I heard there was a horrible attendance, only 50 per cent of tickets were sold but it’s hard here in America. People got to understand it’s hard, especially when they don’t really know you like that.

“Over here in America, they love the excitement, they love knockouts. They love a person who can talk his stuff like that too, but they love the knockouts.

“If you gonna talk that s*** then they want to see the knockout, especially if you’re a heavyweight.

“If you can’t do that then everything else is all good and dandy but you have a fighter like Tyson Fury with attendance like that, it’s crazy.”
